Panasonic NB-G100P 7.2-Quart 1300-Watt Infrared Toaster Oven Review

I read all the reviews on the net, decided I had to have it, bought it, took it COMPLETELY apart, and even repaired it (unit wouldn’t turn on, had to fix the power button). And all within 36 hrs. Now I’m an expert on the Panasonic NB-G100P Toaster Oven. It’s my first toaster oven (and the first time I’ve used a toaster oven), but I made up for lost time. I don’t know if its really the best toaster oven ever made, because B&D makes some high end infrared models, and Cuisinart makes some fine models too, I see. But the reviews are deserved. It’s very fast, makes crispy toast that’s chewy on the inside, and does most of the things you’d want to do in a toaster oven well. It will not take the place of a regular oven or even a microwave. It’s discontinued now, but if you can get one second hand, consider yourself lucky (I do, I got mine for CDN. used. Cheaper price than any of the 200+ reviewers!). Won’t give it 5-stars though, because it does have a number of drawbacks. Which are: The shell is made of very flimsy, thin sheet metal, and the rack is also flimsy. This makes the unit very light and easy to dent. The pan is bare aluminum. Sturdy, but impossible to clean. Requires a teflon sheet. The shell of the unit has no insulation, which can make the exterior EXTREMELY HOT (was thinking of adding oven insulation, but decided not to, as the design requires air circulating to the outside, to cool it). At 500 degrees, you will burn yourself if you touch any part of the exterior, save for the keypad area. If you have small kids and don’t want them to get burned, keep ‘em away from this thing (remember, I said if you DON’T want them to get burned). Because of this, KEEP THE CORD AWAY FROM THE UNIT. Do NOT tuck the power cord under the oven (which can get extremely hot), or let it touch any part of the exterior. YOU RISK BURNING THE CORD and possibly starting a fire. Despite the two heating elements at the top of the oven, THIS WILL NOT BROIL. That’s a huge bummer. Bread will get hard before cheese ever browns. The timer beep is soft, like a not so loud digital wristwatch beep. Easily missed. On my first try, I did not succeed at cooking a Hungry Man frozen tv dinner (do NOT put a plastic tray from a frozen dinner in this oven! I put the food on the aluminum tray, and covered it with foil). At 320d-355d for 30-35minutes, the turkey was still frozen, along with most of the dinner. The oven tends to cook the exterior of food more than the interior, especially, if you set the heat too high and not long enough. So it appears to be good for some foods, not so good with others. Also, it looks fugly (I have the even fuglier silver model). Like a 1980′s Technics home audio cassette deck. Overall, I’m very happy with my purchase.
